Day 1 -- 28th May

Time (PDT) Odo- meter
13:00 336

Touchdown at Las Vegas. We picked up our Jeep Cherokee and at once hit the road and followed I-15 north to ...

14:20 440

I-15 threading along the Virgin River.
The Neveda/Arizona State Line. The short stretch of I-15 cutting across the northwestern corner of Arizona followed the narrow Virgin River Gorge to climbed up the Colorado Plateau. Soon after we exited the Gorge we crossed ...

14:40 460

The Arizona/Utah State Line.

14:55 475

Barren cliffs overlooking St. George.
Near St. George we exited I-15 to fill up on gas. Then we followed Rt. 9 and 59, which headed back southeast into Arizona. We needed to keep our eyes out for the small road to Cane Beds.

15:45 511

Views on the road through Cane Beds. The pictures were kind of murky as we took the pictures without rolling down the windows (it was quite dusty driving on an unpaved road), and the dirt on the windows were clearly visible.
Here is the unpaved road to Cane Beds, which ribboned north through a beautiful rock garden, with red rock buttes decorated with green scrubs. After nine miles, we were back in Utah, approaching ...

16:20 528

The Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.
Hiking statistics: 2.5 mi ↕80ft.
Wind shaped these huge sand dunes, up to 80ft tall, made of fine pink sand. So soft was the sand that it was tough to walk uphill; Constantly were we sliding downward along with the shifting sand. After a long struggle, an out-of-breath CK finally conquered the dune. See him panting? Emily was so exhausted after climbing the dunes that she decided to roll down. Faster and easier. A beautiful desert plant reclining on the sand. Emily with a tall plant blooming with flowers (or fruit? We could not tell.)

17:35 528

After spending quite some time to remove tons of sands from our boots, clothings and hair (especially for someone who rolled down the dunes), we left the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

18:30 553

We checked in at the Victorian Inn at Kanab (pop. 5500), a clean little town which caterred to visitors to Zion, Bryce, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, where we would be the next day.

19:30 554

We had dinner at the Houston Trails End Restaurant right on the main Street (Rt. 89), where we were served very juicy and well-aged rib-eye steak, as well as some huge portions of nachos. Too bad that we have forgotten to bring the camera.
