Day 2: 15 July

10:30am
The peak of Snæfellsjökull hidden in clouds
Many roads in Iceland were not paved. Note the shining sea in the background.
One of the numerous roadside waterfalls. Iceland was famous for its waterfalls, and in the days to come, we would meet many impressive ones.
A small church at Staðarstaður
Fully refreshed, we left Reykjavík for Snæfellsnes (Snow Mountain Peninsula) in Western Iceland. The highest peak of Snæfellsnes, Snæfellsjökull (Snow Mountain Glacier), was an extinct volcano. In Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the World (an adventure story which was interesting to teenage boys but kind of silly to adults), this was through the crater of Snæfellsjökull where the hero entered the subterranean world.
1:30pm The two huge stone pillars at Lóndrangar rose dramtically at the shore. The cliffs along the coast were fully occupied by birds.
Emily and CK blocking the beautiful scenery. Esther and Thomas enhancing the scenery. Click on the picture; can you find the baby birds? Thousands of birds, perching on every inch of flat space on the cliffs.
3:30pm
Grundarfjörður, outside Kaffi 59. The bay of Grundarfjörður. What can be better than a little nap after a little snack?
A snowy valley under the sun; get out your sunglasses. The photographer busy at work. Scenery on the mountain road.
After Lóndrangar, we have a little afternoon snack (OK, I confess, a whole 16 inch pizza, yummy!) at Kaffi 59 in the tranquil little town of Grundarfjörður. Afterwards the girls fell asleep right away, a ritual they followed almost everyday.

7:00pm

We spent the night at the Bjarg (Cliff) guesthouse at Borgarnes.
See how happy we were; Esther the gourmet chef had prepared us pasta and soup! Very yummy indeed. The only disappointment was the Malt Extract (the drink we were toasting here), which, despite the beer-like packaging, was NOT beer. (It tasted like Chinese herbal tea.)
Bjarg guesthouse
Pretty wild flowers at the bay. Skipping stones at the bay behind the Guesthouse. Thomas was very good at it. Emily had not got a clue.
Thomas has taken tons of pictures here, including four panorama. Due to bandwidth limitation, only two are shown here.
