Day 13: 26 July

9:30am
Esther enjoying the fresh Iceland morning.

We did not have any definite plan for our last whole day in Iceland. Just wanted to relax and have a nice time. Having a nice time meant food, and food meant Reykjavík. So to Reykjavík we went.

Snapshots at downtown Reykjavík.
Before and after lunch. Thomas was happier after lunch since the food was good. Emily was sad since the food was gone.

After spending 2 hours in the downtown bookstore (intellectual food was important too!), we had lunch at Cafe Paris, a French restaurant just next to the town square where the aerial photography exhibition was. It felt kind of strange to be back at where we were 12 days ago, when we had little idea what we would see on the trip but all excited to find out. Now we were back, full of fantastic memories, but also a little sad to have to say goodbye to such a beautiful land.

After lunch, we checked into Hotel Keflavík (five minutes from the airport) before paying another visit to the Blue Lagoon. At the advice of a gas station attendant, we had dinner at Kaffi Muu in the Keflavík harbor, which served excellent seafood.

The fish at Kaffi Muu was excellent -- our best meal in Iceland and a worthy coda to our adventure. Notice the two small shot glasses on the table. Those were for brennevín, a local hard liquor distilled from potato. Nicknamed "black death", it was supposed to be served with hákari, rotten shark meat buried for up to six month until it accquired its notorious pungence. The waitress shuddered at the mention of its name, and much to her relief, we did not order hákari. Could all acquaintances be forgot, and never brought to mind?
