| Thank you, Esther and Thomas, for inviting us on such a memorable journey. |
Here we were back at the
Keflavík International Airport,
our rendezvous 13 days ago.
Esther and Thomas took an early flight back to Geneva, where Gut and Don (their two cats), two very full inboxes and 2000 junk emails awaited their return.
Emily and CK's flight was in the afternoon, so we hanged around in the Hotel.
Here came the most surreal experience of the whole trip.
When we were checking our email in the hotel (and feeling stupid before an Icelandic
keyboard), we heard something very familiar.
Blasted through the building was singing in Cantonese, the Chinese dialect of Hong Kong, where CK grew up and Emily lived for four year.
And the voice was from the grave; it was Koma Wong, the lead singer of Beyond,
the first Hong Kong rock band which bursted into prominence in CK's college years.
Koma passed away in an accident back in 1993 (CK remembered attending a memorial
concert in LA).
And now, ten years after his death, at the end of the world, his voice was still
ringing.
Not surprisingly, we later found a Chinese restaurant just next to the lobby.
Still, it did not diminish the surreal feeling as if a fault has developed in spacetime
like the fissures in Ţingvellir, across which one could shake hand with his younger
self.

CK's dazzled mind was still spinning when we walked into the airport, where
he bought a bottle of brennevín at the first duty-free shop despite having more than
two hours to shop for the best price. Quite stupid.
On the other hand, Emily had no regard for prices and bought smoked sausage and
smoked salmon (quickly consumed during the flight).
The brennevín is still lying on the wine rack.
If Esther and Thomas visit us in Maryland, we will open the bottle over some of Esther's
magical cuisine.
