Day 5 (7th Feb 2001)

Route 66 zigzagged through northeast Oklahoma, cut through the extreme southeast corner of Kansas for 12 miles, before entering Missouri. Making a diagonal across the beautiful Missouri landscape, we reach the suburb St. Louis by the evening.

This is Emily in front of the Route 66 Drive-In Theater, and CK at the adjacent gift store. We chatted with the store owner, who told us that this is the 75th anniversary of Route 66, hoping that this would bring more business in the summer. We bought a very nice Route 66 metal stamp dispenser as a sovernir.

At an old-fashion gas station at Strafford near Springfield. One of our only two photo together for the whole trip! The owner of the gas station, who was kind enough to take the picture for us, said that he will have to move his beautiful gas station closer to I-44 as there were not enough business on Route 66. What a pity! We wish him best of luck ...

Stauton

Near Gray Summit, we left the standard Route 66 (which ran parallel to I-44) and followed US-100, which was the 1920s alignment of Route 66. We were taking this alternative alignment as US-100, which eventually becomes Manchester Road, passes right through Ballwin, where our friends Kamto and Eliza Wan live. We are their house guests for the night.

Ballwin (Manchester and Henry)

We spent the night at Kamto and Eliza's beautiful home, where everybody (Kamto, Eliza, Eliza's mother) was happy to see the three-month old Jason Wan getting bigger everyday. Although he was only three-month old, he was already keenly watching our gathering around the dinner table, as if he was eager to try out some adult food -- a sure sign of smartness. Yes, Jason, adult food does taste better.
